The University of Edinburgh founded the first School of Scottish Studies in 1951 and the establishment of its courses led to a flourish in the study of Scottish literature, history and culture. Until then Scottish literature had been subordinate to English literature and not considered worthy of separate academic study. Just under 60 years later, Edinburgh University set up its Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies in 2008 to take the study of these subjects in new directions. Now with the Independence Referendum drawing ever nearer, Scotland and its literature and culture are beginning, once again, to take centre stage.
