摘要

Robert Weir has produced a workmanlike book which makes a good resource for US labour history. But it is strictly introductory. In a short note at the front Professor Weir modestly disclaims any great ambitions for the work: it will be useful, he tells us, for students at school and undergraduate level and for public libraries and journalists, but specialist scholars will probably find it wanting. There is no disgrace in that: he clearly knows his readership.Ten years ago Professor Weir co-authored a book with James P. Hanlan: the Historical Encyclopedia of American Labour, also in two volumes (Weir and Hanlan, 2004). Now Workers in America can be considered a second edition of that book but the links between them are tenuous. The earlier book boasted a section on the big court cases on labour law and an "extensive bibliography for additional research".
