摘要

Most people just take music for granted. It hardly rates a mention in older textbooks on psychology or on human anthropology. It is only in comparatively recent years that research workers in either discipline have begun to accept the central role of music in human mental activity. Anthropologists have long been pondering over the origins of human speech: the jury is still out on the question of the extent to which the earlier forms of the genus Homo - Neanderthals etc., were able to communicate complex ideas. It is only comparatively recently that anthropologists have begun to consider whether melody and rhythm may have preceded or at least coincided with the development of speech.
