The Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Civil War is a welcome addition to the already established series of dictionaries from Scarecrow Press on war, revolution and civil unrest which includes subjects as diverse as ancient Greek warfare, the Zulu wars and the Holocaust. The volume follows the pattern set by others in the series beginning with a useful list of acronyms and abbreviations, five pages of maps illustrating the progress of the war and a 16 page chronology of events beginning with the proclamation of the First Republic in 1873. There follows an excellent 22-page introduction to the war which would suffice most students required to write an essay on the conflict; it will also serve as an excellent summary of the conflict for anyone with a general interest in the causes and course of the war. The volume ends with a useful 40 page bibliography of works both in English and Spanish; these include the standard accounts by Hugh Thomas and Professor Paul Preston, as well as less-well known, but important works, such as the Duchess of Atholl's memoirs, Searchlight on Spain, 1938.
