The momentous events of the past few years in the Arab world have made it necessary to revise all previous reference books, but publishers run the risk that their replacements may be outdated before they appear. Whatever now happens in Egypt, the country will continue to be one of the most influential in the region, for, as the author points out, it has the largest population among Arab countries, is arguably the focus of Arabic culture and certainly the world's oldest state. So it deserves to be the subject of one of the largest of the Scarecrow series of historical dictionaries; of two, in fact, as another is devoted to Ancient Egypt.
