摘要

This volume is another one of the growing Edinburgh Companions to Scottish Literature series edited by Ian Brown and Thomas Clancy. In the introduction the female editor poses the question as to why there appears to be the need for a separate volume on women's writing as previous series volumes included some women writers. One of the answers given, which appeals to the reviewer, is that it gives such writings more space on their own rather than having to share the space with the more dominant male writing. The Edinburgh Companion to Twentieth Century Scottish Literature (Brown and Riach, 2009) (RR 2011/ 074) did include some women writers but the majority of the content was by and about male Scottish literature and culture.
