"Are we alone?" asks the foreword to this work, which poses what is perhaps one of humankind and science's greatest unsolved conundrums. Sadly this work does not set out to answer this question, but rather it seeks to provide an exceptionally detailed handbook for what we do know of biological processes, organisms and how they operate beyond the bounds of our world. It may not be possible to extrapolate directly to alien life forms, but it is a scholarly starting point. In order to illuminate this multifarious topic though, this work needs to pull together subjects drawing on all of the classical physical and life sciences. This is a book where entries on astronomical phenomena like Planetary Ring Structures naturally sit close at hand with the inner-workings of biochemical pathways.
