A commonly quoted figure is that "99 per cent of all species that have ever existed have disappeared". Extinct Birds details bird species that have become extinct over the last 700 years - this amount of time can be covered due to advances in historical archaeology and palaeontology and the book does include references using sub-fossil remains. We have all heard of the Dodo, the Great Auk and the Passenger Pigeon but this book covers 429 species and subspecies. Errol Fuller has written the forward to this book. He wrote a book with the same title (Fuller, 1988) which covered species extinct since 1600 although as he says in the foreword, his book is "something of a romantic ramble through the subject" whereas he points out that this work "is a tremendous compendium of information".
