One of the central questions surrounding historical writing is whether it is possible to achieve objective truth. The problems of nostalgic memory and the human tendency to make ugly history more palatable, have often relegated objective historical writing to museum didactics. That's not to say that there isn't a place for nostalgia. As Boomers and Gen-Xers get older, sentimentality and wistfulness for other decades and other eras becomes a commodity for surviving the uncertainties of The New World. But do these elements have a place in writing outside of historical novels?
