摘要

It is no exaggeration to say that the outcome of the Second World War was determined by British and American control of the sea. Despite many merchant ships sunk in the Atlantic with German U-boats coming close to severing the vital trans-Atlantic supply chain and disastrous battleship losses to the Japanese in the Far East off Malaya and at Pearl Harbor, it was the ability of the British and Americans to overcome these setbacks that was critical to eventual victory. The Royal Navy helped evacuate Dunkirk and its existence was crucial in deterring a German invasion of the British homeland. It eventually sunk the Bismarck in the Atlantic despite the destruction of HMS Hood. Later the Battle of the Atlantic was won, control wrested back in the Mediterranean, convoys to Russia protected (albeit not without heavy losses) and the D-Day landings supported.
