In 1983 Heimo Mikkola wrote the definitive Owls of Europe (Mikkola, 1983) and 25 years later was asked to write this book on owls of the world. If you have trouble separating your screech owl from your eagle owl, Tawny from your Snowy Owl or Javan and Jungle Owlets then this is the book for you. The majority of owls (68 percent) live in the southern hemisphere which is perhaps why I had not realised that there are 249 species of owl and this book covers each of them individually. Everyone seems to like owls and flicking through this book with its superb photographs I can see why. The Pygmy owls are my favourite and I have spent too long looking at all the glorious photographs.
