Michael Powell Siddons has written this monumental work with authority and meticulous attention to detail. Although he trained and worked as a medical doctor, Michael Siddons' extensive interest in heraldic badges, which was aroused while studying the heraldic content of Welsh poetry, has led him to becoming an expert in the field. His previous works include The Development of Welsh Heraldry (Siddons, 1991-2006) which was awarded the Paul Adam-Even Prize of the Academie Internationale d'Heraldique and has received other awards. He was appointed Wales Herald Extraordinary in 1994 and is a member of the Academie Internationale d'Heraldique. Heraldic badges are emblems, which usually signify a mark of ownership or allegiance and can be seen in many contexts. There are two main uses of these: first, hierarchical and military, and second, for decorative purposes. Badges have been used in livery, warfare and tournaments and also in dress, furnishings, plate, jewellery and monuments. A well-known example of a heraldic badge is the red rose of the House of Tudor.
