摘要

This monograph contains descriptions of the 52 (44 species and eight hybrids) native or naturalized Sorbus taxa in the UK and Ireland. It is based on morphological and molecular taxonomic studies coupled with extensive field work, during which 22 new trees have been described. It is the result of over ten years collaborative work between the National Museum Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Universities of Bristol, Exeter and Oxford. The book starts with an excellent 21-page general introduction covering a wealth of information for the specialist and non-specialist alike. This includes: the history of the Sorbus taxonomy in the UK and Ireland from John Ray who in 1724 recognized four species right up to recent contributions from the Avon Gorge Sorbus project at Bristol University in 2010; a very technical discussion about the genetics behind the various species of Sorbus; cytology, biology and ecology of the species; phytogeography of the British and Irish Sorbus since the last glaciation; and finally an extensive account of the reference collections.
