Reference collections are often targeted to downsize as libraries attempt to reconfigure space to accommodate user requests for additional study rooms and quiet areas for reflection. Publishers now offer libraries the flexibility to create e-reference collections by offering traditional reference texts as e-books. The Encyclopedia of African American Popular Culture, edited by Jessie Carney Smith, is available as an e-book and in print. Smith, a well-known scholar to librarians who purchase African American reference texts, is the Dean of Fisk University Library and the William and Camille Cosby Professor in the Humanities. Smith has edited or authored numerous encyclopedias such as Notable Black American Women (Smith and Phelps, 1992), Black Firsts: 4,000 Groundbreaking and Pioneering Historical Events (Smith, 2003), Encyclopedia of African American Business (Smith et al, 2006), Notable Black American Men (Smith, 1998), Historical Statistics of Black America (Smith and Horton, 1995) and Black Heroes (Smith and Giovanni, 2001).
