Although this title is part of a series of "Historical Dictionaries", this volume on Postwar Japan resembles a mini-encyclopaedia, with many longer entries extending to several pages and even the shortest are six or seven lines long. It provides more than just definitions and gives a useful level of context and explication. The coverage is wide-ranging including some broad topics such as agriculture and crime, but most of the entries are for organizations or individuals with a particular emphasis on politics and the arts, including contemporary popular culture. The content of the entries is readable, authoritative and typographically error-free, as one would expect from an author who is an eminent Japanese scholar. The book begins with a chronology spanning August 1945 to July 2010 with lengthier entries for the more recent years. The layout saves space by having items for each year in a single paragraph so it is not easy to scan for a particular event. There is a brief narrative introduction which covers topics such as the economy, foreign policy and society -some of which are revisited in the main text. The layout of the dictionary section is clear with headings in bold capitals, followed by Japanese characters where relevant, and with any items appearing in their own right also in bold in the text.
