摘要

The previous volumes of the Scarecrow Press sub-series on the history of diplomacy have all been concerned with relations between the USA and various parts of the world. This one breaks new ground in dealing with Chinese foreign relations. The author has exceptional qualifications for his task, having been employed throughout his career as a Far Eastern analyst with several US government departments and universities, and having eighteen previous books to his credit. He has provided about 500 entries, none of very great length (the longest is of 800 words) on people (foreign as well as Chinese), countries, organizations, events, agreements, and general concepts relevant to Chinese foreign policy since the advent of the People's Republic. It would be fair to say that within that period, the emphasis is on the past rather than the present. An examination of the text shows that much more space is given to relations with the USA than with any other country (for instance, President Clinton is accorded a longer entry than Chairman Mao himself).
