A country divided is the cliche applied to Germany throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, but this moniker is wholly appropriate for its cinematic output. Until 1990, West Germany and East Germany competed separately in the best foreign language film for the Academy Awards. German cinema has enjoyed relatively recent mainstream success with Run Lola Run (Tom Tykwer 1998) and Good Bye, Lenin! (Wolfgang Becker 2003).
