Divided into three sections, the first devoted to Forms, the second to Spaces and the third to Practices, A Companion to American Literary Studies is not "organized exclusively by author, time period, genre or nation". Its editors, Caroline F. Levander and Robert S. Levine observe in their Introduction that "Forms, spaces, practices are the key terms that" the volume "adopts for conceptualizing the current state and future direction of American literary studies in the twenty-first century".
