Hollywood is fascinated by the past, and history provides it with an inexhaustible reservoir of plots, characters, and settings. However, these stories of war, exploration and political intrigue far outweigh Hollywood dramatisations of the development of science and technology. Of the thousands of identifiable historical figures appearing in American films and television programmes, fewer than a hundred are scientists, engineers, or inventors.
