It is a joy when your editor sends me a book published by one of the Boydell & Brewer imprints (this one, D. S. Brewer; the Antique Collectors' Club is another). This work is no exception. Perhaps less profusely illustrated than some of the others - though the hundred-plus plates are of a high standard - but the detail and scholarship manifest in the book is humbling and inspirational. Corpus Christi College, Oxford, was a 'Renaissance' foundation founded in 1517, and browsing through the descriptions of the two hundred-plus manuscript books in the College library one finds oneself at a critical stage in the development of Western culture.
