Where in London might Jane Austen's gentlemen have gone to "dine well, and to the best advantage"? Ralph Rylance's early nineteenth century almanack of places to eat, drink and be merry in and around the capital city lists every type of establishment from coffee houses to taverns. Editor Janet Ing Freeman has brought the Regency "good food guide" up to date, correcting Rylance's occasional errors and adding current information about surviving businesses and locales (yes, a few of the pubs and eateries from 1815 still exist, in one form or another, in London today!). The almanack is a treasure trove of social and culinary history to delight researchers and general readers alike, illustrated with a colourful Rowlandson print on the cover and filled with plans of Rylance's London.
