摘要

The ambitious scope of this companion is tackled in the introduction which presents as "A Story of the Stories of American Fiction After 1945". Here the editor John Duvall foregrounds the constantly shifting conceptualisations of "American fiction", in terms of stylistics, content and key authors. Whilst these shifts reflect revisions of the achievements of earlier fiction in the light of the present, the usefulness of the "post-second world war" timeframe becomes increasingly fragile as the range of literature it encompasses grows as the twenty-first century goes on. Duvall approaches this dilemma through his acknowledgment of the historical constructions of "American fiction" and how these have been shaped by literature anthologies, academic criticism and developments in the provision of literature courses in American universities.
