This 3rd edition of the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science, or ELIS3 as it is referred to in the introductory matter, appears just seven years after the second edition which I also had the privilege of reviewing in these columns (RR 2004/ 356). The four volume 2nd edition edited by Miriam Drake and issued under the now defunct Dekker imprint was in turn a successor to the mammoth first edition. Initially published over 15 years in 33 volumes from 1968 to 1982 under the editorship of Allen Kent, who with Drake is listed as an "honorary" editorial board member for the 3rd edition, this was continued by numerous supplements eventually amounting to 73 rather unwieldy and discordant volumes. Although a worthy successor to the original, Drake's second edition was a much more constrained publication and as a result the original ELIS, with its distinguished dark blue covers, continues to grace the shelves of many major libraries or collections serving institutions teaching library and information science. Like the second edition, this latest ELIS is available either in print or online with combined print and online combination packages also offered by publisher CRC Press, part of the Taylor & Francis group.
