Basically, this book, like others in the publisher's series (on Arabic, Chinese, French RR (2009/372)), German, Portuguese and Spanish), provides a list of the five thousand most frequently-used words in contemporary American English. Starting with the most frequent words: "the", "be" and "and", it goes through to "objective", "electronics", and the verb "trim", ranked 4,998, 4,999 and 5,000 respectively. All words in the ranked frequency list have their top 20-30 "collocates" (nearby words) for that word listed. These are not just synonyms as we might have in a thesaurus or a usage dictionary, but words most associated with the entry word. Thus for "present" as a noun we have listed the adjectives "historical", "perfect", "immediate", "eternal", "expensive", "going-away", "wrapped", and "perpetual"; the nouns "past", "future", "Christmas", "birthday", "wedding", "tree", "attorney", "graduation", "anniversary", and "memory"; and the verbs, "buy", "open", "bring", "focus", "live", "wrap", "include" and "survive". An indicator shows those words that precede or follow the word in question, but the precise form in which the collocation occurs is left for us to guess.
