Shelley described Romantic poetry as "the words which express what [the poets] understand not", and denning the genre by date or style has equally defied literary academics and critics ever since. Romanticism, and the poetry which is an essential creative outlet of the movement, spans roughly the second half of the eighteenth century - against a historical backdrop of the Age of Enlightenment and the French Revolution - and into the early nineteenth century. Traditionally associated with the iconic names of six "canonical" poets - Blake, Byron, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley and Wordsworth - the relaxed definition of romantic poetry has also allowed for the later inclusion of lesser-known female authors such as Felicia Hemans and Charlotte Smith. The companion aims to provide an informative and original insight into the genre, covering the form, movement, contemporary context and critical issues of romantic poetry.
