In Ironies of a Postmodern Journey, the ninth and final chapter of their study of these groups (mainly in the USA) On the Backroad to Heaven, Donald Kraybill and Carl Desportes Bowman, argue that "the old orders torment the postmodern soul". For all their different names (not all are old order), they "trouble us because they unravel our assumptions about bigness, progress, diversity, freedom, individual dignity and tradition [...] The wisdom afloat in their cultural reservoir suggest that some things are best removed from personal choice, that firm limits and clear boundaries may best preserve human dignity over the generations".
