Before there were automobiles and airplanes to transport people, before there were trucks to carry freight, North America relied on the railroad. Hayes writes, the railroad "was created for the average person" and established an efficacious and "new mobility that simply did not exist previously" (p. 116). Trained as a geographer Hayes has written and compiled other atlases (including Historical Atlas of the United States (Hayes, 2007a), Historical Atlas of California (Hayes, 2007b) (RR 2009/148) and Historical Atlas of the American West ((Hayes, 2009). This title offers maps, photos and beautiful illustrations (many from the author's personal collection) that chronicle the birth, the growth, the dominance and the eventual decline of the railroad in North America.
