The Francis Ford Coppola Encyclopaedia is another interesting volume from The Scarecrow Press. It is the second in a series, after The Ridley Scott Encyclopedia (Raw, 2009) (RR 2011/092) focussing on the life and works of directors that are still active. The foreword comes from the prolific John Tibbetts who efficiently limns the trajectory of Coppola's career. It serves as an excellent primer to Coppola country; within the borders of which one will find the expected film making territories, but also valleys devoted to wine making, and plains regarding Zoetrope: All Story, the science fiction and fiction magazine that he edits. Coppola land is a complicated place then, and we have a number of editors and contributors to the encyclopedia to guide us. James Welsh is one of three contributing editors, and he supplies his own introduction. Here he attempts to explain why Coppola deserves his own encyclopedia at this stage in his career that, as Welsh is keen to point out, is far from over.
