Some of the most momentous events of the twentieth century were covered by Picture Post between 1938 and 1957. Digitisation of its complete historical archive by Gale Cengage, which follows the publisher's other recent efforts including The Illustrated London News Historical Archive {RR 2011/003), makes an important contribution to our understanding of these turbulent times. Its imaginative and innovative photo-journalism captured all aspects of life from bomb damaged towns to happy pictures of royal babies in their prams. More than that, it gave us a portrait of ordinary British life showing everything from children playing to young women posing at the seaside. Smiling celebrities were not ignored but there were also substantial articles on subjects such as the railways or the British colour bar. Advertisements are faithfully reproduced. These depict products popular with ordinary consumers, such as Davis Gelatine, Beecham's Powders and California Syrup of Figs.
