The US engaged in both large-scale offensive and defensive efforts against Great Britain during the War of 1812. The main American offensive thrust was an attempt to wrest control of Canada through several raids into that country. The main American defensive struggle took place in the Middle Atlantic area against a powerful British force that set its sights on both Washington and Baltimore. The British launched their punishing invasion of the American mainland by way of the Chesapeake Bay. The long stretch of the waterway is bounded by both Maryland and Virginia; the fighting occurred in both states, as well as the District of Columbia. It is fitting that an historical guide to this significant phase of the war encompass in its scope, as this guide does, the whole Chesapeake region.
