摘要

Sustainability is one of those words that now have to appear in any statement of policy or industry. Often this is in a vague phrase: "doing X in a sustainable way" or "a sustainable solution". Seldom is there any mention of how the process is sustainable, often no mention of what is being sustained and even rarer why the need to be sustainable. Well now there is even less excuse for such vague texts and pronouncements - this book deals widely with the concepts and the practices of sustainability. The three volumes of this work are separately titled Environment and Ecology, Business and Economics, and Equity and Fairness. The three volumes use the same five chapter headings Introduction and Overview, Definitions and Context, Government and United Nations Involvement, Controversies and Future Directions and Emerging Trends. Each volume has appendices, portal websites, Millennium Development Goals and the Earth Charter plus a bibliography and an index.
