In his article "History of the novel, theory of the novel", Franco Moretti (Moretti, 2010) declares that in editing the two volume work The Novel his "guiding idea" was "... to make the literary field longer, larger, and deeper" - historically longer, geographically larger, and morphologically deeper than those few classics of nineteenth-century Western European "realism" that have dominated the recent theory of the novel (Moretti, 2010, p. 1). In the Introduction to The Encyclopedia of the Novel, the editors also recognise that there has been "a restricted definition of the novel as a product of western modernity" (p. xvii) and cite Petronius's Satyricon and a work by Chariton, Callirhoe, both first century works, as well as works from China and South Asia. The encyclopedia has a "global scope and temporal breadth" and will "serve as a resource for scholars interested in tracing the conjunctions among national traditions and among older and new narrative forms. It can serve as a starting point for mapping kinships and for understanding particular novelistic traditions, like national canons, as part of a truly global context" (p. xvii).
