A thorough collection of references to string quartets, this volume arranges material from a number of catalogues according to six broad headings. By far the largest of these is chapter three (over 350 pages) where references relate to the string quartets of individual composers, although the preceding chapter on historical aspects of the string quartet runs to some 65 pages and chapter five on aspects of performance to 40 pages. This is a scholar's work, and as such is clear about the material that has been included and reasons for exclusion of certain types of material. The main exclusion is in general works, as these are annotated in other books. This keeps the volume to a manageable size. The annotations are concise and only included as a brief summary where the thrust of the article is not obvious from the title. These are all helpful and particularly useful for articles written in languages other than English. As the references are to scholarly research the section on performing groups omits a number of well-know quartet names, because nothing has been written about them in this type of journal. However, performers might find the chapter on aspects of performance useful, and the miscellaneous section might provide items of interest for the keen amateur, but the main focus of interest will be for students and researchers in academic music departments.
