The entire field was purple. Cycling along a Suffolk lane in mid-June, one's eye was suddenly drawn to a mass of colour on the left; a bright purple blanket stretching almost to the horizon. The peloton stopped and, after water bottles had been drained, exchanged views about the crop that could have produced such a beautiful sight. However, being city people and not having a copy of Sally Francis's book in the back pocket, guesses were all we could offer. But would have British Field Crops have helped? And has the second edition added much in the five years since the first (RR 2007/29) was published?
