I intended to consult my favourite forensic adviser, Professor John Gunn for comments on this book, but then discovered that he was one of the contributors. In fact everyone I know who can give me criminological advice seems to have taken part. Twenty-five years in the Institute of Psychiatry library has meant that a sizeable proportion of all the British psychiatrists and psychologists with any interest in such matters have passed under my gaze at some point or other. I have therefore had to rely on my own unaided opinions. The word "British" does need emphasis. This is very much the production of members of the British Psychological Society's (BPS) Division of Forensic Psychology. Although the book's Table of Cases curiously consists entirely of American case law, the emphasis here is largely on British practice, and only three of the 80-odd contributors are American. The BPS Division of Forensic Psychology started in 1977, and grew steadily up to the turn of the century, since when its membership has rocketed. It is now one of the strongest divisions of the BPS, well able to support the compilation of a dictionary such as this.
