The first thing to say about this reference tool is that it is an essential start to anyone wishing to understand Australian politics. However, it does not cover the whole of the political scene in the country - there is a definite leftist bias because the two editors, Professor Brian Galligan and Dr Winsome Roberts, are both lecturers in political science and social policy at the University of Melbourne. By their very nature, these departments tend to lean towards left of centre in their teachings. In addition, rightwing politics in Australia are very fragmented - there exists no unified Conservative party such as we are familiar with in the UK, although there is a Liberal Party. There exists too an intellectual "Loony Left" in Australia - but any useful information on this group is omitted. Other contributors to this work come from trade union backgrounds, feminist studies, social studies or similar, so many look to the left for their inspiration. The second omission, which the reviewer feels is quite serious and detracts from the value of the book, is that it has no index.
