There are two major atlases available for the medieval time period, An Atlas of Anglo-Saxon England (Hill, 1981) and the companion volume to this new title, Atlas of Medieval Europe (MacKay and Ditchburn, 1997). This particular volume reflects the time period 1066 through 1500 for England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. It does not replicate any material in Hill's book, but it does complement and follow the same structure as the Atlas of Medieval Europe. Cultural, political, religious, economic evidence on the medieval British Isles is graphically illustrated in the volume. Many of the maps have been drawn for the first time by the author, some are taken verbatim from other published sources (with appropriate acknowledgement), while most have been modified and interpreted by the author from the evidence available. The book is divided into five major chapters. There are seven general maps illustrating such things as the physical geography of the British Isles, and the medieval county divisions in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
