Glastonbury, Edinburgh, the Chelsea Flower Show, Glorious Goodwood and the Isle of Man TT are well-known festival events. Less well known are the Hull International Sea Shanty Festival, the York Early Music Festival, the Cambridge Beer Festival, the Porthcawl Elvis Festival and the Leeds West Indian Carnival. Virtually unknown are the Saddleworth Rushcart, the Newcastle Hoppings and the Isle of Wight Garlic Festival. As compiler Jeffries writes: "In Britain, we have a fantastic variety [of festivals] to choose from. Some date back hundreds of years; some are just setting out. Some attract visitors and participants from all over the world, some are all about the local community. Some make headline news while others are well-kept secrets. Many are unique; many are just plain weird. There are huge festivals and tiny festivals, festivals that last one night and festivals that last all summer, countercultural festivals and festivals sponsored by multicultural corporations". The "fantastic variety" of festivals is, as any front-line enquiry desk assistant will testify, a real cause of difficulty. I well remember one inquirer being sent to London for the Motor Show when it was being held at Birmingham! That assistant was not I, but it could well have been, so it is with great pleasure that I review The Best of British Festivals.
