The Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences Series provides comprehensive and authoritative coverage of all the main areas of the earth sciences. There are ten volumes in print as I write this review with another seven forthcoming. This volume claims to be the first single encyclopaedia to cover the combined fields of geomagnetism and paleomagnetism. Geomagnetism is the study of the earth's magnetic field and the magnetic record left in rocks is studied in paleomagnetism. These two subjects are important for a wide range of applications including navigation, unravelling plate motions, in the search for hydrocarbons and in dating rock sequences: the role these two subjects have played, especially in the development of plate tectonics since the 1960s, has been huge.
