摘要

This book, the 46th Blackwell Companion to Literature and Culture, is a collection of 29 original essays on satire from its emergence in Western literature to the present. The seven chapters in Part I start with the first appearance of satire in the prophetic books of the Old Testament and cover the development of the "Art of Blame" through classical literature, medieval satire, to Renaissance satire in the work of Rabelais and other French authors, the Golden Age of Spanish satire, the verse satire of the English Renaissance, and the prose satire of Italy and England. Part II covers the Restoration and eighteenth century satire of England and France. Chapter headings here name Dryden, Swift, Pope, Johnson, Crabbe, Behn and Burney.
