摘要

For numerous generations of school pupils, my own generation included, the first ancient authors we read were historians: Xenophon for Greek and Caesar for Latin. Both were chosen not just for their language and style, but for the interest of the stories they told. Much the same was true when we moved on to Thucydides and Livy: authors whose style and use of language aided our own education in Greek and Latin grammar but who also told us many fascinating stories. Of the many literary legacies from the ancient world, the writing of history seems to be about the most pervasive and enduring through later ages into our own times. So perhaps it should come as no surprise that of the various excellent Blackwell Companions to the Ancient World I have reviewed, this should be the longest, extending into two volumes.
