The period since the beginning of the Second World War has seen a steady stream of distinctively experimental writing in Europe and the Americas. Compact and dense, the Historical Dictionary of Postmodernist Literature and Theater is a considerable achievement by its author, a lecturer in film studies at the University of Winchester in the UK. Fran Mason economically summarises complex practices, ideas and movements, and key figures and works in postmodernist fiction, poetry, drama and theory. The result is certainly an invaluable reference-aid for the graduate student. However, it also serves as a useful introductory guide for the general reader new to this complex, and changing, field.
