The Beethoven-Haus Bonn Digital Archives is one module of the web site published by the museum of the same name in Bonn, Germany, birthplace of the composer. The comprehensive museum web site is a fascinating journey through the life and works of one of the world's most famous composers; it is creatively designed and is, for the most part, navigable for the average visitor. The Digital Archives, reviewed here, are also well designed and will be of particular interest to scholars, students and librarians. The Digital Archives are divided into five collections: Works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Sketches by Beethoven, Manuscripts by Other Composers, Written Documents, and Pictures and Objects. Researchers will find the library collections useful, unique and wide-ranging. There are 5,000 documents, 1,600 audio files and 7,600 text files. It should be noted that there may be some technical difficulties when starting out and different software requirements for audio letters and music samples cause confusion. Directions and links to the required downloads are available from the web site which should make any problems short-lived and manageable. The complexity and density of the multimedia contents of the archive create a need for some explanatory notes on usage. These are provided.
