Now celebrating a 40th birthday, this old friend has started to put on some weight and has about twice the number of pages and is larger than the 1968 first edition. That makes it less easy to carry in the field but in compensation it has 35 more British and Irish species of sedges, rushes and "grasses", as well as about 50 recognised hybrids. All the maps have been updated since the second edition, and all have been given a full page. The work starts with a discussion of the structure of the Cyperaceae in relation to the species accounts that follow. A short section then deals with classification and the arrangement of species used in this book. Following that are chapters on ecology and hybridisation. A key is given to fertile sedge material. This introductory material then gives way to the largest part of the book, the descriptions of species and hybrids. Each species is covered in three pages, one of descriptive text, one with illustrations of the plant structure, and one with a distribution map. The final section deals with dubious records, a glossary, a bibliography and indexes to English and Latin names.
