摘要

Researchers have so many web resources available on the internet but, as they soon discover, there may be inaccuracies. Critical thinking and fine scholarship demands an engaged evaluation of all sources. Some scholars show special concern for the potential dangers of students not properly evaluating web resources. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported earlier this year that the history department at Middlebury College adopted the following statement "Whereas Wikipedia is extraordinarily convenient and, for some general purposes extremely useful, it nonetheless suffers from inaccuracies [...] Students are responsible for the accuracy of information they provide, and they cannot point to Wikipedia or any similar source that may appear in the future to escape the consequences of errors" (Read, 2007). For scholars who have a growing concern over what students are citing, they may find online guides like BlackPast.org a welcome alternative to Wikipedia. Blackpast.org is a wonderful reminder of scholarly resources available on the web. Creator Quintard Taylor is a noted scholar and author of African American Women Confront the West (Taylor and Moore, 2003), In Search of the Racial Frontier (Taylor, 1998) and Seeking El Dorado (DeGraaf et al., 2001). Taylor, the Scott & Dorothy Bullitt Professor of American History at the University of Washington, specializes in African American history in the West. Additional details regarding his scholarship and courses are available when users select Dr Taylor's web site from the online guide. In The Daily, the University of Washingtonrnnewspaper, Taylor describes the site as "the Google of African American History" (Greenleaf, 2007). This might be an ambitious moniker at this juncture, but Dr Taylor's project is in spirited pursuit of such comprehensiveness in the future. The article provides readers with an intriguing story about the development of Blackpast.org.
