摘要

The latest addition to the Scarecrow Press series covers a period (1829-1849) in which the leaders of the War of Independence had passed away, but not many of those who would direct the Civil War had yet come to prominence. This Dictionary's 750 articles, ranging in length from about 50 to 1,500 words, include personalities (the largest group), organizations, movements, parties, tribes, battles, controversies, treaties, acts and slogans important to the period. All aspects of history are included, not just the political ones, so in its pages can be found, variously, J.J. Audubon, P.T. Barnum, Samuel Morse, Edgar Allen Poe, and even Sarah Hale, author of Mary Had a Little Lamb. The editorial policy of the series discourages coverage of the earlier, or later, careers of those featured.
