The Megalithic monuments dominating the British landscape were built over 6,000 years ago, and interest in these structures is not new, it stems from the seventeenth century. This is when John Aubery was writing his Monumenta Britannica -providing diagrams and descriptions of both Stonehenge and Avebury. At the same time a Welsh antiquarian, Edward Lhywd was discovering passage tombs in Ireland and it was not long before people began to realise the sheer diversity of the Megalithic monuments surrounding them. It was in the early nineteenth century that serious excavation work was undertaken, initially only on visible sites. During the later part of the nineteenth century when General Pitt-Rivers began his fieldwork, good standards of archaeological excavation became the norm. It was he who uncovered many of the timber, turf and underground structures, as well as the more obvious standing stone monuments.
