摘要

This ambitious set from ABC-Clio is "intended to be the authoritative reference work on Southeast Asian history, catering to users of high school, public and university libraries" (Preface p. xxi). Its credentials and statistics are certainly impressive. Editor Ooi Keat Gin has a string of recent articles and monographs on the region to his name and is currently Associate Professor of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Sains Malaysia in Penang. The six member editorial advisory board comprises distinguished academics from the USA, UK, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand including Nicholas Tarling editor of The Cambridge History of Southeast Asia (Tarling, 1992), a work these three volumes could be considered to both complement and update. More than 130 specialists have contributed articles, a refreshing number drawn from universities and research institutes in Southeast Asia. The volumes are solidly bound in covers depicting a classic Southeast Asian landscape of jagged peaks, lush forest and flat rice paddies with inset pictures of a lecturing Ho Chi-Minh and saffron-robed Buddhist monks. Altogether there are 1,791 pages, about 1,350 of which are devoted to the main sequence of over 800 entries.
