In dünn besiedelten Räumen der EU nimmt der Aufwand der Bevölkerung zur Versorgung mit Gütern und Dienstleistungen des Grundbedarfes seit drei bis vier Jahrzehnten in steigendem Maße zu. Der Grund für diese Entwicklung ist in der Ausdünnung des Standortnetzes der Anbieter zu sehen, die durch den Bevölkerungsrückgang und das sich wandelnde Versorgungsverhalten der Nachfrager forciert wird. Beides führte und fuhrt zu einer Abnahme der in dieser Raumkategorie vorhandenen bzw. verbleibenden Kaufkraft und wirkt sich somit auf die Entwicklung der räumlichen Angebotsstruktur aus. Jedoch haben nicht nur diese handelsexogenen Einflüsse der Nachfrageseite die allgemeine Ausdünnung des Standortnetzes bewirkt, vielmehr beeinflussen zeitgleich verschiedene handelsendogene Faktoren die Veränderung der Einzelhandelslandschaft in allen Raumkategorien.%In sparsely populated regions of the EU private expenditures for daily supply with goods and services have been increasing strongly during the past three to four decades due to a widening in the supply network. On the supply side these processes were triggered by changes in retail formats and in the distribution systems of the producers and wholesalers, both in favour of an increasing spatial and sectoral concentration. On the demand side alterations in consumer behaviour can be identified as well: Amounts of goods purchased per shopping trip rise while shopping frequencies fall, enabled by modern storage technology, increasing car ownership, and the individual willingness to travel larger distances on daily trips, thus distributing a larger proportion of buying power on more central shopping locations. In part, these processes on the demand side have accommodated or even absorbed the disadvantages for the consumer caused by the supply side concentration. In sparsely populated areas this process is additionally accelerated by outbound migration of young and economically active social groups, withdrawing even more demand and intensifying the melting away of present retail structures. For the case of the Swedish glesbygd these ambivalent processes in their development since the late 1960s are shown and the interventions and national planning policy measures for the reduction of the resulting disparities explained. Furthermore, their impacts on the spatial concentration processes were examined and made subject to a rudimental evaluation. As the Swedish planning tools and pilot projects are considered to be a possible role model for the European context, the current public discussion about the so far introduced measures and subsidies and alternative ways of securing daily supply in sparsely populated regions are presented.
