This splendid book by Matthew Jackson provides an exhaustive overview of the recently developed literature that incorporates networks into economic modeling. We all feel embedded in social networks involving family, friends, and work. The World Wide Web, an enormous and complex network, has profoundly affected the way we communicate and search for information. Globalization has extended economic and financial linkages, and in the connected economy local behavior generates global effects. The literature on the economics of networks helps us understand the effects of networks on social and economic outcomes and provides a framework to explore the roles of institutions and public policies in a networked world.
